SUMMARY:“Exploring Library and Archives Canada Online” by Ken McKinlay followed by the SGS Annual General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few years the website for Library and Archives Canada has undergone a number of changes. For some long-time users of the old site\, this has caused moments of frustration. In this talk Ken will take a look at the new site\, touch upon using the new census search system\, and explore other resources they have made available to us. \nEmbarking on a genealogical adventure over two decades ago\, Ken McKinlay’s quest began with a mission to confirm or debunk three family stories. Despite uncovering the truths behind those initial tales\, Ken’s passion for delving into his family’s past remains steadfast\, fueled by a constant stream of new questions. As a sought-after speaker by branches of Ontario Ancestors\, the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa\, and other genealogy societies across Canada\, Ken McKinlay shares his expertise through engaging talks and workshops. His topics have included researching those who have fought for Canada in the world wars\, exploring the Canadian censuses\, delving into the mysteries of Ontario Land Records\, and an eight-part series covering “Back to Basics” research for the British Isles. His presentations also focus on genealogical methodologies and overcoming genealogy brick walls. Beyond public speaking\, Ken shares his insights on his blog\, Family Tree Knots (https://familytreeknots.blogspot.com/)\, providing a valuable resource for fellow enthusiasts. \n Following Ken’s presentation and questions and answers there will be a short break before the Annual General Meeting gets underway.  There are no major motions for changes to the Constitution or Bylaws on the agenda at this time.

SUMMARY:SGS Annual Meeting & Guest Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Come out for the SGS Annual General Meeting (AGM)  and hear what we accomplished in 2025 and where we’re going in 2026.  We’d love to hear your feedback and better yet\, why not give some consideration to becoming a Board member\, and be a leader.  You do not have to be an SGS member to attend\, but you do need to be a member to vote. \nStick around after the AGM for a presentation by Marie Palmer at 11:00 a.m.  Marie is going to give a presentation on Investigative Genetic Genealogy(IGG).  She is an Accredited Investigative Genetic Genealogist (AIGG) and educator based in Canada. \nIGG offers an exciting new opportunity to help law enforcement give names back to unidentified human remains and help solve criminal cases.  Since the first high-profile case was solved in 2018\, well over a thousand cases have been cracked using IGG.  Canada has its own share of successful case solves and there is much discussion\, controversy\, and numerous questions around this new way of generating leads in cold cases.  In this presentation\, Marie Palmer\, who has numerous case solves will give an overview of IGG and walk through a Canadian case study about one of her first successful identifications.
