SGS FALL 2026 FUNDRAISING APPEAL

Autumn is a time for thanksgiving. At the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society we are thankful for the 56 years we have assisted Saskatchewan families in tracing their roots and documenting their histories. We have amassed a library collection of over 10,000 items – one of the largest in the country. Members can drop by the office to borrow items, chat about their projects and get assistance with their searches. They can also remotely access SGS and external data bases at no charge, vastly expanding their fields of inquiry. They can have library resources mailed to them, again at no cost.

Over the years the SGS has sponsored networking conferences, training programs to assist members at all levels of experience, and also offered programs for members seeking genealogical certification. This fall the SGS will be unveiling a revamped library system, greatly simplifying search and request processes.

The SGS faces challenges in the delivery of its mandate.  A significant percentage of our operating budget is supported by grants from SaskCulture, thanks to lottery funding. It is likely the amount of our grant may be reduced over future years as lottery revenue is down.

The location of our office/library, in a transitional neighbourhood, is proving to be an impediment to service delivery. Although we empathize with the plight of marginalized persons in our community, as an organization we must prioritize the safety of our staff, volunteers and users of our services. The reality is that we need more funds in order to afford commercial rental rates in more desirable areas.

As such, the board has made relocation a key objective; an active search for an alternate location is underway. Our board is taking the exceptional step of turning to our membership base seeking support through charitable giving. As with all charitable giving, a tax receipt will be issued to all donors for use on your next tax return. Our objective is to raise sufficient funds to enable us to seek a new location in a safe neighbourhood which can accommodate our large collection, provide meeting space for training purposes and offer a welcoming space for volunteers and service users.

In closing I want to thank you in advance for your generosity in ensuring the SGS can continue to deliver the services which families, seeking to document their histories, can rely on.
